Kratie Province Celebrated as Cambodia's 15th Mine-Free Region

Phnom Penh, March 26, 2024: Marking a momentous day in its history, Kratie Province has been officially declared mine-free, becoming the 15th province in the Kingdom of Cambodia to achieve this significant milestone. The declaration on March 26, 2024, signifies the end of a longstanding threat from landmines for the people of Kratie.

Over the span of two decades, from 2003 to 2023, concerted demining efforts were undertaken in Kratie Province by three key operators: the National Center for the Management of Peacekeeping Forces, Demining and Remnants of War, the Cambodian Mine Action Center, and the NGO HelloTrust. Together, they successfully cleared over 133 square kilometers (approximately 795 square kilometers) of land, locating and neutralizing around 60,000 mines and explosive remnants. This monumental task has directly benefited nearly 400,000 residents, providing them with safer lands for agriculture, development, and daily life.

The clearance of mines in Kratie Province stands as a testament to the diligent efforts of the Royal Government during its 7th mandate, bolstered by the Cambodian Mine Action Fund 2025 and the Samdech Techo Project for Joint Mine Action. The achievement has been made possible through the support of international friends, development partners, and philanthropists. Remarkably, the last six months have seen not only Kratie but also Kampong Speu and Mondulkiri provinces being declared mine-free, showcasing the government's commitment to eradicating the scourge of landmines from Cambodia.
